Ingredients
  

For the Cookies

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Let it soften to room temperature.
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped (optional) Omit for nut-free version.

Optional Toppings

  • Sprinkles or colored sugar For festive flair.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  • In a larger bowl, cream together the softened butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  • Beat in the egg, followed by the vanilla and almond extracts, mixing until well incorporated.
  • Gradually blend in the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined to avoid overworking the dough.
  • Finally, stir in the chocolate chips and walnuts if using.

Baking

  • Drop spoonfuls of the dough onto ungreased cookie sheets, leaving space between each for spreading.
  • Bake for about 9 to 11 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
  • Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

For best flavor, let the butter soften but do not melt. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or freeze for up to three months. Warm in the microwave for comfort.
