Equipment

  • 10x15-inch rimmed baking sheet
  • Medium saucepan
  • Spatula or offset spatula
  • Aluminum foil or parchment paper

Ingredients

  • Base Ingredients
  • 40 saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional Toppings
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 1/4 cup crushed candy canes
  • 1/2 tsp flaky sea salt
  • holiday sprinkles or toffee bits, for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a 10x15-inch rimmed baking sheet with foil or parchment, leaving overhang. Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer to cover the pan completely.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and bring to a rolling boil. Boil for exactly 3 minutes, stirring constantly, until smooth and caramel-like.
  • Immediately pour the hot toffee evenly over crackers and spread quickly with a spatula. Bake 5 minutes until bubbly all over.
  • Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips evenly on top. Let sit 2–3 minutes to soften, then spread into a smooth layer with a spatula.
  • Sprinkle on your favorite toppings (nuts, candy canes, sea salt, sprinkles). Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours until firm.
  • Lift the candy from the pan using the foil overhang. Break into pieces by hand or cut with a sharp knife. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

Use real butter (not margarine), line your pan well with foil or parchment, and chill completely before breaking for clean pieces. Customize with your favorite toppings like nuts, sea salt, or crushed candy canes.
