Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Spatula
  • Small mixing bowl
  • toaster oven or broiler

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 6–8 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 hoagie or sub rolls
  • 2 tbsp butter, for toasting
  • salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add a drizzle of oil if needed and sauté the diced onion and green pepper until soft and lightly caramelized, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it into crumbles. Drain excess grease, then stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  • Whisk the beef broth and cornstarch together. Pour into the skillet with Worcestershire sauce and simmer 2–3 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Reduce heat to low. Lay provolone slices over the beef, cover, and cook for 1 minute until cheese is melted.
  • Split hoagie rolls, spread with butter, and toast in a pan or under the broiler until golden.
  • Spoon the cheesy beef mixture into toasted rolls and serve immediately.

Notes

Toast the hoagie rolls to prevent sogginess and add extra flavor. For a more authentic Philly-style version, swap provolone for Cheez Whiz. Avoid overcooking the beef to keep it juicy. Mushrooms can be added with the onions and peppers for a ‘fully loaded’ version.
