Ingredients
  

Sugar Cookie Dough

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp lemon zest or almond extract optional

  • powdered sugar for icing or dusting
  • colored sanding sugar or edible glitter optional

Instructions
 

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes).
  • Add the egg, vanilla extract, and optional lemon zest or almond extract. Mix until combined.
  • Gradually mix in dry ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour to firm up.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  • Roll dough on a floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with flower-shaped cookie cutters.
  • Transfer cookies to baking sheets, spacing 1 inch apart. Bake for 8–10 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
  • Cool on sheets for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before decorating.
  • Decorate with edible flowers, buttercream piping, or dust with powdered sugar. Optional: press edible flowers into cookies before baking for a baked-in design.

Notes

For best results, use organic, food-safe edible flowers. Buttercream or royal icing works well for piped flower decorations. Let icing set before storing.
